Porcelain veneers are considered the gold standard of cosmetic dentistry. When you think of your perfect “Hollywood smile”, chances are the individual in question has had porcelain veneers placed on their teeth. Veneers have been around since the late 1920’s and actually originated in Hollywood by Dr. Charles Pincus, who was looking to develop a way to enhance the smiles of his star patients. The original dental veneers were only temporary and made of acrylic, and could be taken on and off. While this is a far cry from the technologically advanced preparation and material selection we use today, it was the start of a revolution in dentistry.
Modern veneers are now made of super thin layers of porcelain, which are bonded onto teeth that have been minimally prepared. The advantages of veneers are the conservative preparation which means very little enamel has to be removed, and the artistry of your cosmetic dentist can give you a beautiful, lifelike finish that is better than what can be found in nature!
Cosmetic porcelain veneers generally take 2 appointments to finish, one for the preparation of the veneers, and one for the insert. In between these two appointments, a set of temporary acrylic veneers will be made for you. These will serve to insulate your teeth from hot and cold, and serve as a cosmetic stop-gap for you to wear while your porcelain veneers are being made.
Once the porcelain veneers are inserted, you will be given detailed maintenance instructions. A beautiful set of porcelain veneers can be expected to last more than ten years, with many patients reporting up to twenty years and still looking beautiful. The longevity of your veneers has much to do with your maintenance of your overall dental health, but with the right home care, you can expect your veneers to last for many, many years.
